How To Select Right Castor Wheel

The following factors must be considered when selecting the right castor wheel for your application. Many factors together contribute in making a decision to select the most suitable castor wheel.

Castor Type

Depending on the type of application, swivel, fix or brake type castors can be used. One should also look at the installation fitting required for the castor. The castors come with top plate, thread pin, stem and bolt hole fittings.

Load Capacity

The size of the wheel increases with the load. The possibility of overload, shock load and poor floor conditions require a safety factory to be included in the formula. The formula below enables load calculation over each castor wheel , considering some of the most important factors.

Where: C = Load per caster or wheel (kg), Pe = Equipment, cart or structure weight (kg), Pmc = Maximum load weight to be carried (kg), N = Number of casters or wheels, S = Safety coefficient

The value of safety coefficient S must be between 1.0 and 2.0, depending on application conditions.

Floor Type

Do you need the floor to be protected or require noiseless movement? Do you have mixed use on asphalt and epoxy flooring? Decide on these conditions and then chose the right wheel material for your application.

Unusual Conditions

Extreme conditions such as high temperatures, oil & chemicals, heavy washing of the equipment, germ free environmentetcmust be factored in when choosing the castor wheel.

Rolling Ease

The swivel head bearings and the wheel center bearings play an important role to make a decision whether the loads are to be pushed manually or being pulled by a towing truck. Select the right bearing considering the load speed and the amount of force needed to bring the loaded equipment in motion.

Ball Bearings

Sealed precision ball bearings are recommended for maximum rolling ease with no maintenance lubrication required. They provide quiet operation for medium duty to heavy duty loads. Used in pairs, they press-fit into the wheel hub. Precision ball bearings (standard or stainless steel) for light or heavy-duty applications can be provided for both radial and thrust loads.

Roller Bearings

The roller bearing is capable of carrying a greater load than the same size diameter ball bearing. It has a split outer race shell into which the roller assembly is inserted. The primary roller is a cylinder which means the load is distributed over a larger area, enabling the bearing to handle large amounts of weight. These bearings must be used on a hardened bush or shaft.

Precision Tapered Roller Bearing

Tapered roller bearings are true precision bearings designed for the heaviest load and high-speed operation. They are idealfor heavy duty and power-towed casterapplications because their tapered faceswill handle the most severe combination ofdownward and side forces. The assembly consists of an outer race or cup and a tapered cone roller assembly, normal held in position with closures.

Metal Sleeve

Most used in light duty castors, these type of plain bearings are an inexpensive, highly efficient , metal sleeve made of powdered metal thoroughly impregnated with oil. These bearings are press-fit into the wheel bore and have a built in lifetime lubrication for normal usage. These bearings can ride on a spanner bushing or directly on axle, depending on the application requirement.
